Two Routes From One Negative
A developed negative can be printed optically or scanned.

What a Scan Captures
Three main properties decide what survives scanning:
- Resolution. A 35 mm frame is 36 mm long, or 1.417 inches. Scanning at 4000 ppi yields about 5,670 pixels across, or roughly 21 megapixels. Scanning below the film's grain resolution causes grain aliasing, a coarse digital artefact.
- Density range. Negative density typically reaches 1.35 above base plus fog. Scanners must capture this full range to prevent blocked shadows in prints.
- Everything the negative is as an object. Surface texture and optical light-scattering effects do not survive the digital sensor.
Hybrid Work
Hybrid workflows combine digital control with analogue materials:
- Expose and develop standard film.
- Scan and edit the file digitally.
- Print the file onto inkjet paper, or print a digital negative.
A digital negative is printed on transparency film. You then contact-print it onto silver-gelatin or alternative process papers.
Common pitfall: treating the choice as a question of quality. The methods simply serve different goals. Scans offer repeatability and easy distribution. Darkroom prints produce unique physical objects with distinct surface qualities.
