The Whole Is Different From Its Parts
Gestalt Psychology challenged Structuralism by proving the whole is different from the sum of its parts. Max Wertheimer proved this in 1912 with the phi phenomenon: two flashing lights are perceived as a single moving light. The brain constructs motion that no individual stimulus contains.
Max Wertheimer, Wolfgang Köhler, and Kurt Koffka formed the Berlin School to study perceptual organization. They defined the Law of Prägnanz (simplicity): the mind automatically perceives the most stable interpretation of ambiguous sensory input.
Common pitfall: Saying the whole is GREATER than the sum of its parts. The correct claim is DIFFERENT: a perceived whole is a genuinely new experience, not just a bigger pile of elements.
