The Whole Is Different From Its Parts
Gestalt Psychology, emerging in Germany in the early 20th century, directly challenged Structuralism's project of decomposing experience into elements. Its central claim — that the whole is different from the sum of its parts — was demonstrated vividly by Max Wertheimer's discovery of the phi phenomenon (1912): two stationary lights flashed in rapid alternating sequence are perceived as a single light in continuous motion. No individual stimulus contains that motion; the brain constructs it by organizing the sequence as a whole, which is exactly what a strictly element-by-element analysis could never predict.
The Berlin School — Wertheimer along with Wolfgang Köhler and Kurt Koffka — turned this holistic insight into a systematic account of perceptual organization, the Law of Prägnanz (simplicity): the mind spontaneously perceives the simplest, most stable interpretation of ambiguous sensory input available. Several specific laws follow from it:

Köhler also studied problem-solving in chimpanzees, famously showing that a chimp named Sultan could stack boxes or join sticks to reach an out-of-reach banana — not through trial and error, but through a sudden reorganization of the whole problem, an "aha" moment Köhler called insight learning.
Common pitfall: quoting the Gestalt principle as "the whole is GREATER than the sum of its parts." The original claim is more precise: the whole is different from the sum of its parts — a perceived whole (like apparent motion) can be a genuinely new experience, not just a bigger pile of the same elements.
