The Mind as an Evolved Toolkit
Evolutionary Psychology applies the logic of evolutionary biology to the human mind, treating cognitive architecture as a product of natural selection shaped to solve recurrent problems faced by ancestral humans in the environment of evolutionary adaptedness (EEA) — the ancestral conditions under which a trait evolved, not necessarily the modern environment we now inhabit. Leda Cosmides and John Tooby, key architects of the field, along with David Buss, argued the mind is best understood as a collection of specialized information-processing mechanisms, each shaped to solve a specific adaptive problem, such as detecting social cheaters or selecting a healthy, high-quality mate.
The field distinguishes three types of traits: adaptations (features directly shaped by selection because they raised survival or reproduction), by-products (features that come along for the ride, riding on an adaptation without being independently selected for), and noise (random variation with no functional significance at all). Critics, notably Stephen Jay Gould, warned against assuming every trait must be an adaptation — some are merely spandrels, incidental by-products of other adaptations.
Buss's large cross-cultural studies across dozens of countries found broadly consistent patterns in mate preferences — for instance, resource-related traits mattering more, on average, to women's preferences and youth/fertility cues mattering more, on average, to men's — patterns evolutionary psychologists interpret through the lens of differing reproductive investment. Cosmides also demonstrated that people reason far more accurately about abstract logical rules when the same rule is framed as a social contract (detecting cheaters) than when framed abstractly, suggesting a specialized cheater-detection mechanism rather than a single, general-purpose logic module.
Common pitfall: treating every evolutionary psychology claim as automatically an "adaptation." Evolutionary psychologists are explicit that some traits are by-products or noise — the discipline requires positive evidence that a trait was shaped BY selection FOR its current function, not just a plausible-sounding story.
