Untangling Genes and Environment

The nature versus nurture debate asks how much of individual variation in traits like intelligence and personality comes from genetic inheritance ("nature") versus environmental experience ("nurture"). Modern behavioral genetics has largely moved past treating this as an either/or question, instead trying to estimate the RELATIVE contribution of each using twin studies: comparing identical (monozygotic) twins, who share essentially 100% of their genes, against fraternal (dizygotic) twins, who share on average 50% of their genes, like ordinary siblings. If identical twins resemble each other on a trait substantially MORE than fraternal twins do, that gap suggests a meaningful genetic contribution to the trait. Studies of identical twins raised APART in different environments add further evidence, since any similarity between them cannot be explained by a shared upbringing.

These studies yield an estimate called heritability: the proportion of variance in a trait, WITHIN A GIVEN POPULATION, that can be statistically attributed to genetic differences. For adult IQ, heritability is commonly estimated in the range of roughly 50-80%, with the estimate tending to RISE with age (sometimes called the Wilson effect) — plausibly because as people age, they increasingly select and shape environments that fit their genetic predispositions.

Heritability is a widely misunderstood statistic, and two clarifications matter enormously. First, heritability describes variance WITHIN a specific population under specific conditions — it says nothing about any single INDIVIDUAL (a heritability of 70% does NOT mean 70% of one person's IQ comes from genes and 30% from environment). Second, heritability WITHIN a population says nothing about the CAUSE of average DIFFERENCES BETWEEN populations or groups, since those groups may differ systematically in environmental factors not captured in the original heritability estimate.

Common pitfall: interpreting a heritability estimate (like 70% for IQ) as meaning "70% of my personal intelligence came from my genes." Heritability is a population-level statistic about the SOURCE OF VARIANCE across many people in a specific context, not a percentage breakdown that applies to any single individual's own intelligence.
