Measuring Something You Cannot See Directly
Personality psychologists rely on two broadly distinct families of assessment tools. Objective tests are standardized self-report questionnaires with fixed response options, scored consistently and compared against normative data from large samples. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) is the most widely used and researched example, originally developed to help diagnose psychological disorders; it notably includes built-in validity scales, designed to detect whether a respondent is faking good, faking bad, or answering inconsistently, which helps flag unreliable response patterns before they are used to guide any clinical conclusion.
Projective tests, by contrast, present ambiguous, unstructured stimuli and ask the respondent to interpret or respond to them freely, on the theoretical assumption that unconscious thoughts, conflicts, and motives will be "projected" onto the ambiguous material, revealing content a direct question might never surface. The Rorschach Inkblot Test asks respondents to describe what they see in a series of symmetric inkblots; the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) asks respondents to construct a story about a series of ambiguous scenes.

While projective tests remain influential and still see some clinical use, they have been extensively criticized for lower reliability (different scorers or occasions producing inconsistent results) and lower validity (weaker evidence that scores actually predict what they claim to) compared to objective tests — a scientific concern that has pushed contemporary clinical and research practice toward objective measures as the primary assessment tool, with projective tests used more cautiously, if at all, as a supplementary source of clinical impressions.
Common pitfall: assuming projective tests are simply an older, outdated curiosity with no modern relevance at all. They remain in some clinical use and retain some theoretical appeal, but the scientific consensus is that their reliability and validity are considerably weaker than objective self-report inventories, which is why objective tests are far more heavily used in contemporary research and much clinical assessment.
