Practice question · Put in order

Arrange these landmarks in the photographic sequence in chronological order.

Hints
  1. The picture story in a magazine comes before the photobook as an art form.
  2. The critical history of the form arrives last, by four decades.
Show the answer
  1. W. Eugene Smith, Country Doctor, in Life (1948)
  2. Robert Frank, The Americans, Paris 1958 and New York 1959
  3. Ed Ruscha, Twentysix Gasoline Stations (1963)
  4. Parr and Badger, The Photobook: A History, first volume (2004)
Why

The forty-year gap before the last item is the interesting part. The photobook existed as a practice for most of a century before it was assembled into a canon with a history, and the assembly changed the practice, photographers now make books knowing that books are a form to be read against other books.
