Photography I / The Zone System and Previsualisation
Practice question · Numerical answer

With the shadow placed on Zone III, a highlight meters five stops brighter than that shadow. Give the number of the zone on which the highlight falls.

Hints
  1. One stop is one zone.
  2. Count five zones up from the third.
Show the answer

8

Why

Zone VIII. Three plus five is eight, and Zone VIII is white with the slightest texture, just inside what the paper can render. One more stop of subject range and the highlight would fall on Zone IX, blank white, and the development would have to be shortened to pull it back.
