Why
Tilt rotates the plane of focus. Under Scheimpflug the subject plane, lens plane and film plane meet on a common line, so tilting the lens forward lays the plane of sharpness along the table. The wedge is no wider than before, it has simply been put where the subject is, which no fixed-plane camera can do.
