Physics II / Electromagnetic Induction
Practice question · Estimate

A generator coil has 200 turns, area 0.05 m2^2, and spins at 100 rad/s in a field of 0.20 T. Set the peak EMF, in volts.

Estimate on a scale from 0 V (0) to 500 V (500).

Hints
  1. Peak EMF for a rotating coil is the product of turns, field, area and angular speed.
  2. Compute 200 x 0.20 x 0.05 x 100.
Show the answer

200 (answers within ±20 count)

Why

Epeak=NBAω=200×0.20×0.05×100=200\mathcal{E}_{peak} = NBA\omega = 200 \times 0.20 \times 0.05 \times 100 = 200 V. The output is sinusoidal and its peak scales with all four factors, which is why generators are wound with many turns and spun fast.
