Political Science I / Parties, Groups, Movements and the Media
Practice question · Sort into groups

Sort each explanation of social movements by the phase of theory it belongs to.

Groups: Grievance · Resource mobilisation · Political opportunity

Hints
  1. The three phases answer the same question with increasing precision.
  2. Anything about elite divisions or repression is the third phase.
Show the answer

Grievance: Grievance spurs protest, Deprivation alone drives

Resource mobilisation: Resources fuel action, Networks recruit first

Political opportunity: Elite splits aid rise, Elite allies open access

Why

The first phase fails on a simple observation: grievances are more or less constant and movements are not, so grievance cannot explain timing. The later phases answer the timing question — with resources, then with the state of the political system — which is why the field moved.
