Practice question · Put in order
Arrange the stages of producing a cast positive in order.
- Demould once set, then clean the seams
- Introduce it so that air can escape
- Check the mould is clean, dry and correctly assembled
- Apply release agent if the material pair requires it
- Mix the casting material to its stated ratio
Hints
- Preparation of the mould comes before any mixing.
- Seam cleaning is the last operation.
Show the answer
- Check the mould is clean, dry and correctly assembled
- Apply release agent if the material pair requires it
- Mix the casting material to its stated ratio
- Introduce it so that air can escape
- Demould once set, then clean the seams
Why
The fourth step carries most of the failures. Pouring without a path for the air produces a cast with a region simply missing, and the fix is a vent, which has to be built into the mould long before this stage.
