Sculpture I / Positives and the Multiple
Practice question · Sort into groups

Sort each casting material by its principal characteristic.

Groups: Fragile and matt · Hard and pigmentable · Heavy and weather-resistant

Hints
  1. Each material has a characteristic that decides where it can be used.
  2. Only one of the three is suitable outdoors without further treatment.
Show the answer

Fragile and matt: Plaster, A chalky white surface

Hard and pigmentable: Polyester resin, Takes fillers and pigments readily

Heavy and weather-resistant: Concrete, Needs reinforcement at any scale

Why

The third column is the only one that survives outdoors, which is usually the decision that settles the material. Plaster is a studio and exhibition material; resin is durable but degrades in ultraviolet; concrete is what goes outside and brings a weight problem with it.
