Sociology I / The Crisis of the Welfare State
Practice question · Estimate

Estimate social protection expenditure as a percentage of GDP for the European Union average in recent years, on the Eurostat measure.

Estimate on a scale from 5 per cent (5) to 50 per cent (50).

Hints
  1. It is well over a fifth of national output and below a third.
  2. The lesson gives it as roughly a quarter to just under 30 per cent.
Show the answer

27 (answers within ±5 count)

Why

Around 27 per cent, moving a few points with the year and jumping in 2020. The number surprises people in both directions: far larger than most estimates of "what the government spends on benefits", because it includes pensions and health, and far more stable than the rhetoric of crisis implies.
