Biology I

A free, interactive biology course: the origin and diversity of life, cells and tissues.

A biology course in two units: life, its origin and its diversity — the chemistry of life, the RNA world, the first cells and endosymbiosis, photosynthesis, the evolution of sex, multicellularity, the colonisation of land and speciation; and cells and tissues — membranes, the cytoskeleton, the nucleus, organelles and plant and animal tissues.

Sobre este curso

Biology I follows life from its chemistry to the tissues of plants and animals, in short lessons each followed by practice questions with instant feedback.

The first unit asks what life is and how it began: the RNA world, the first cells and endosymbiosis, membranes and cellular energy, photosynthesis and the oxygen revolution, the origin of sex and multicellularity, the colonisation of land, speciation and global change. The second unit looks inside the cell — membranes, cytoskeleton, nucleus, the endomembrane system, mitochondria and plastids — and then at plant tissues and the epithelial, connective, muscle and nervous tissues of animals.

How long is Biology I?

2 units, 20 lessons and 220 practice questions. It is self-paced: each lesson is short, followed by questions with instant feedback, and your progress is saved across devices.

Which languages is Biology I available in?

English, Catalan, German, Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese. You can switch language inside the app.

Do I need prior biology knowledge?

No. Secondary-school science is enough; the course starts from the chemistry of living things.

Does it cover both plant and animal biology?

Yes. The cells-and-tissues unit covers plant cells, meristems and plant tissues as well as animal epithelial, connective, muscle and nervous tissue.
