Contrast and Interaction
In 1824, Chevreul directed dyeing at the Gobelins tapestry works. Weavers complained that black wool looked weak beside certain blues. Chevreul proved the dye was pure; the eye caused the shift. He published his findings in 1839.
His work defined key visual effects:
- Simultaneous contrast: a colour shifts due to an adjacent neighbour in space.
- Successive contrast: an afterimage shifts perception across time.
- Bezold effect: discovered in 1874, where altering one colour changes an entire repeating pattern.
In 1963, Josef Albers published Interaction of Color. He showed how backgrounds make one colour appear as two or make two colours appear as one.
Chevreul mapped these shifts using a chromatic circle of 72 hues, which placed complementary pairs directly opposite across 72 segments.
Harmony and Value
Johannes Itten published The Art of Color in 1961. He formalised the contrast of extension, which assigns proportional areas to colours. It uses Goethe's light values to balance areas in an inverse ratio.

Value contrast remains the most critical structural element. Hue contrast collapses at a distance, but light-and-dark patterns carry across a room. Squinting isolates this underlying value structure.
Common pitfall: treating simultaneous contrast as an error. Every Colour is modified by its neighbours; no tone exists in isolation.
