The Half of the Picture the Viewer Paints
A canvas holds pigment, but a picture happens in the visual system. It groups, separates, completes, and corrects automatically.
The Berlin school of Gestalt psychology described these regularities. Max Wertheimer's 1923 paper remains the classic reference for grouping laws.

Figure and ground
Before grouping, the eye decides what is object and what is surround. Edgar Rubin introduced his famous vase-or-faces figure in 1915 to explore this.
A region reads as figure when it is:
- smaller
- enclosed by another region
- convex
- meaningful
Constancy and Contrast
Lightness constancy is vital in painting. Take white paper with reflectance 0.85 and black paper with reflectance 0.05.
In sunlight at 10,000 lux, the white reflects 8,500 units and the black reflects 500. Move the white paper into deep shade at 300 lux. It now sends 255 units to the eye. That is roughly half the light of the sunlit black paper. Yet the white paper still looks white.
The eye does not measure incoming light directly. It estimates the surface property by inferring scene illumination.
In 1865, Ernst Mach described a related edge phenomenon. The visual system exaggerates contrast at boundaries, creating Mach bands. These illusory bands can make smooth tonal transitions appear stepped.
Common pitfall: treating perceptual principles as mere decoration. They operate automatically and decide whether an image reads correctly. Grouping will happen regardless of painterly intent.
