Honest Signals

Animal communication relies on a sender conveying information to a receiver. Signals travel through four main modalities:

ModalityExample
ChemicalAnt pheromone
VisualPeacock tail
AuditoryWolf howl
TactileGrooming

The Handicap Principle explains why extreme displays persist. Because the display is costly, only high-quality individuals can afford it. A low-quality faker cannot sustain the cost.

Common pitfall: assuming cheap signals work as well. A cost-free signal would be faked by anyone, so receivers would quickly learn to ignore it. Cost is what keeps the signal honest.

Two displays face a rising cost, and only one keeps affording it

Ritualization

Ritualization is the evolutionary process where an ordinary behavior becomes specialized into a signal. These often originate from a displacement activity—an action performed out of context during conflict, like preening.

Over generations, the behavior becomes:

Through this process, everyday grooming or threat movements transform into specialized courtship displays or distinct threat gestures used in communication.
