Investing in the Next Generation
Parental care is any behavior by a parent that raises the fitness of its offspring, typically at some cost to the parent's ability to invest elsewhere. Its forms include provisioning (feeding), protection from predators or rivals, and thermoregulation (keeping offspring at a viable temperature). How much a parent invests is shaped in part by paternity certainty: males are typically less certain than females that a given offspring is genetically theirs, especially in species with internal fertilization, which historically correlates with lower average male investment.
Robert Trivers' theory of Parent-Offspring Conflict explains why parents and their own offspring do not always agree on how much investment is "enough." A parent is related to each of its offspring by , and equally so to all of them — so investing further in one offspring has a real, if partial, cost in terms of resources available for future offspring (each also related by ). An offspring, by contrast, is related to itself by but only to a future sibling. Because that offspring values its own gain twice as much as it discounts the sibling's loss, it is selected to keep demanding investment for longer than the parent is selected to keep providing it — the evolutionary root of weaning conflict, tantrums, and sibling rivalry.

Common pitfall: framing parent-offspring conflict as one side being "selfish" and the other "generous." Both sides are simply favoring the reproductive strategy that maximizes their OWN inclusive fitness — the conflict is a mathematical consequence of relatedness asymmetry, not a moral failing on either part.
