Bending to the Group
Humans are exquisitely sensitive to social influence. Two of psychology's most famous experiments showed just how far.
Conformity is adjusting one's behavior or thinking to match a group standard. In Solomon Asch's line-judgment studies, participants gave an obviously wrong answer about which line matched a reference — simply because a group of confederates had all given that wrong answer first. Conformity flows from two motives: normative influence (conforming to be liked or accepted, to avoid standing out) and informational influence (conforming because you assume the group knows something you don't).
Obedience is complying with the direct command of an authority figure. In Stanley Milgram's experiments, ordinary participants continued delivering what they believed were dangerous electric shocks to a stranger — up to lethal levels — simply because an experimenter in a lab coat told them to continue. A striking majority obeyed fully. Obedience rose when the authority was close and legitimate, and fell when the victim was near or the authority distant.

Common pitfall: treating conformity and obedience as the same thing. Conformity is yielding to the influence of peers (a group standard); obedience is following the direct order of an authority. Milgram studied obedience to authority, not conformity to a group.
