One Brain, Two Specialists

The cerebral cortex is split into two hemispheres joined by the corpus callosum, a cable of 200 million fibers keeping them in constant communication. Each hemisphere exhibits contralateral control, managing the opposite side of the body. They are organized into four lobes:

Common pitfall: Taking pop-psychology "left-brained" or "right-brained" labels literally. Real lateralization is a matter of relative specialization, not a total split; both hemispheres contribute to nearly everything via the corpus callosum.

Split-Brain Insights

For most right-handers, the left hemisphere dominates language and analytic processing, while the right hemisphere specializes in spatial reasoning, faces, and emotional prosody.

Roger Sperry and Michael Gazzaniga studied split-brain patients whose corpus callosum was severed to control epilepsy.

The classic test: Information flashed to the left visual field (reaching only the right hemisphere) could be pointed to with the left hand, but could not be named aloud. Language production requires the left hemisphere, and with the callosum cut, the right hemisphere's experience could not cross over.
