Alongside the fast electrical nervous system runs a slower chemical one: the endocrine system, a network of glands that secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream. Where a neuron's message is fast, targeted, and brief, a hormone's is slow, widespread, and long-lasting — carried by the blood to any cell with the right receptor.

The pituitary gland, dangling from the hypothalamus, is the "master gland": its hormones direct many other glands, and it is itself controlled by the hypothalamus — the point where the nervous and endocrine systems meet. Other key players include the thyroid (metabolism), the adrenal glands (which release adrenaline and cortisol during stress), and the gonads (sex hormones).

The stress response runs along the HPA axis: the hypothalamus signals the pituitary, which signals the adrenal glands to release cortisol, the body's main stress hormone. Cortisol mobilizes energy and, in turn, feeds back to shut the axis down — a self-regulating loop. Where the sympathetic nervous system produces a fast adrenaline surge in seconds, the HPA axis produces a slower, sustained cortisol response over minutes to hours.

Common pitfall: thinking the endocrine system is just a slower copy of the nervous system. Its messages are not only slower but broader and longer-lasting — a single hormone released into the blood can affect many organs at once, for minutes, hours, or even years, in ways a brief targeted neural signal cannot.
