The Limbic Core

Ringing the top of the brainstem is the limbic system, a set of structures that generate emotion, drive, and the formation of memory. Four structures do the heavy lifting.

The amygdala is the brain's threat detector and emotional core, central to fear and aggression. It flags danger before the conscious mind catches up, which is why you flinch at a shape on the path before recognizing it as a stick, not a snake.

The hippocampus is essential for forming new long-term memories; damage to it leaves old memories intact but blocks the making of new ones.

Regulation and Relay

The hypothalamus is a tiny regulator that governs basic drives like hunger, thirst, body temperature, and sex. It also controls the pituitary gland, linking the nervous and hormonal systems.

The thalamus is the brain's sensory relay station. Nearly all sensory information, except smell, passes through it on the way to the cortex.
