The Emotional Brain

Ringing the top of the brainstem is the limbic system, a set of structures that generate emotion, drive, and the formation of memory. Four structures do the heavy lifting.

The amygdala is the brain's threat detector and emotional core, central to fear and aggression. It flags danger before the conscious mind catches up, which is why you flinch at a shape on the path before recognizing it as a stick, not a snake. The hippocampus is essential for forming new long-term memories; damage to it leaves old memories intact but blocks the making of new ones. The hypothalamus is a tiny regulator that governs the basic drives — hunger, thirst, body temperature, and sex — and controls the pituitary gland, linking the nervous and hormonal systems. The thalamus is the brain's sensory relay station: nearly all sensory information (except smell) passes through it on the way to the cortex.

Common pitfall: confusing the hippocampus and the hypothalamus because their names sound alike. The hippo_campus_ makes new memories; the hypo_thalamus_ regulates drives (hunger, thirst, temperature) and hormones. Very different jobs.
