The Body's Wiring Diagram
The nervous system is the body's rapid electrochemical communication network. Its first great division is anatomical. The central nervous system (CNS) is the brain and the spinal cord — the processing core where information is integrated and decisions are made. The peripheral nervous system (PNS) is every nerve outside that core, the cabling that carries signals to and from the rest of the body.
The PNS then splits by function. The somatic nervous system carries sensory information inward and commands to the skeletal muscles outward — the system of voluntary movement and conscious sensation. The autonomic nervous system (ANS) governs the involuntary machinery: heart rate, digestion, breathing, glandular secretion.
The autonomic system itself has two opposing branches that keep the body in balance:

These two branches are antagonistic: the sympathetic branch throws the body into an aroused, energy-spending state during threat, and the parasympathetic branch returns it to a calm, energy-conserving baseline afterward. Health depends on the smooth back-and-forth between them.
Common pitfall: assuming the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches take turns being "on" and "off." In reality both are active at all times; what changes is the balance between them. Arousal is a shift in that balance toward the sympathetic side, not the flipping of a single switch.
