A rising began in the French colony of Saint-Domingue in 1791, and slavery there was abolished by the Convention in February 1794. Bonaparte sent an expedition to restore it in 1802 and it was defeated; on 1 January 1804 the colony declared independence as Haiti.
The thirteen-year span is worth holding, because it includes an abolition, a re-imposition attempt, and a defeat of a European expeditionary force. That last item is why the revolution was so hard for contemporaries to narrate: it was not a moral failure of the colonial system but a military defeat inflicted by the people it enslaved.
