Psychology I / Cognitive Dissonance and the Drive for Consistency
Practice question · Select all that apply

Select every outcome that cognitive dissonance theory actually predicts.

Hints
  1. Two options are the everyday intuitions the theory contradicts: one about reward size, one about which element gives way.
  2. In the studies, the act had already happened and could not be undone - so ask what was left to change.
Show the answer
  • C. After choosing between close options, people rate the chosen one more highly than before.
  • D. Less external justification for a counter-attitudinal act means more attitude change.
  • E. People often value a group more, not less, after a painful initiation.
Why

Weak justification amplifies attitude change, suffering breeds effort justification, and choosing breeds post-decision rationalisation. The two false options are the intuitive ones: bigger rewards actually produce LESS belief change, and it is usually the belief, not the already-performed behaviour, that gives way.
