Inquiry Gets a Name
The Greek word historia means inquiry. Herodotus is the father of history because he went and asked, collecting accounts and describing customs.
Thucydides narrowed the aperture: contemporary events only, eyewitnesses cross-examined, and strictly human causation driven by power, fear, and interest.

Sima Qian's Shiji and Ibn Khaldun's Muqaddimah proved European narratives ignore advanced non-Western historiography.
Ranke and the Professional Discipline
Leopold von Ranke built modern history with three moves: primary sources over chronicles, source criticism, and the seminar to train apprentices.
His goal was wie es eigentlich gewesen—showing how it essentially was. This produced two ironies:
- The theological pivot: eigentlich means essentially, rooted in Ranke's belief that each epoch relates directly to God.
- The archival bias: State archives yield state histories, erasing peasants, women, and the colonized.
The method encodes a politics. Following only the documents means following power. Every methodological rule silently determines who is visible.
