History Has a Plot
Hegel claimed history is going somewhere, and the destination is freedom. The engine is Geist (Spirit), coming to know itself through time.
Its motion is dialectical: a thesis generates an antithesis, and their conflict resolves into a synthesis. This motion uses Aufhebung, meaning simultaneously to cancel, preserve, and lift up.

The Cunning & The Critique
History looks like a slaughterhouse because of the cunning of reason (List der Vernunft). Historical figures pursue selfish passions, while Spirit uses them as instruments and discards them.
The Three Objections
- It knows the ending: It reads the plot backward, arriving at Hegel's Prussia.
- Racialized stages: Hegel viewed non-Europeans as beneath history to justify the climb.
- Unfalsifiable: Any event or catastrophe is explained away as dialectical necessity.
Why it matters: Marx stood Hegel on his head, and Fukuyama echoed him in The End of History (1989). Teleology survives in modern political grammar.
