The Feet Came First
Everyone assumes the brain led. It did not. The single most reliable finding in palaeoanthropology is that bipedalism precedes encephalization by millions of years — we walked upright for roughly three million years while carrying an ape-sized brain, and only then did the skull start inflating.
The evidence is unarguable. Lucy (Australopithecus afarensis, ~3.2 million years ago) walked fully upright on a brain of about 400 cc — chimpanzee range. And at Laetoli, three individuals crossed wet volcanic ash 3.6 million years ago and left footprints: a human stride, a human arch, no knuckle-marks. Ash hardened; feet became fossils.
This wrecks the story people expect — big brain first, then tools, then walking to carry them. The actual sequence:

Why walk first? Nobody is certain, which is itself the honest lesson. Candidates: freeing the hands to carry food; efficiency over long distances as forests broke into patches; a smaller sunlit surface at midday; better sightlines over grass. Bipedalism is not obviously "better" — it is a compromise that wrecked our backs, our knees, and made childbirth dangerous. Evolution does not optimize. It tinkers with whatever variant survives long enough to breed.
Brains Are Expensive
A modern human brain is about 2% of body weight and burns roughly 20% of resting energy. No animal gets a bargain that steep for free. Something had to pay:
- Meat and marrow — dense calories, unlocked by tools, from carcasses other animals could not open.
- Fire and cooking (Richard Wrangham's argument) — cooking predigests food outside the body, so the gut can shrink and hand its energy budget to the skull. Note our guts are small for a primate our size.
- Groups — the "social brain" hypothesis: tracking who owes whom, who lies, who allies with whom is computationally brutal, and being outsmarted by your own species is a permanent arms race.
The bill also came due at birth. A wide pelvis carries a big head; a narrow pelvis walks efficiently. You cannot have both, so human babies are born early and helpless relative to other primates — which produces long childhood, extended learning, and the necessity of cooperative care. The awkwardness of human infancy is a direct structural consequence of walking upright with a large head.
Not a Ladder — a Bush
The march-of-progress image is the most persistent lie in science illustration. There was never a single file of ancestors improving toward us. There was a bush: many hominin species, most of them dead ends, and for almost all of the last few million years, several human species were alive at once.
We are the strange case. Homo sapiens appears in Africa by roughly 300,000 years ago (Jebel Irhoud in Morocco pushed the date back and, importantly, showed a modern face on a still-elongated braincase — evolution in mosaic, not in lockstep). Neanderthals, Denisovans, Homo floresiensis — all real, all human, all gone within the last 50,000 years. And they are not entirely gone: most people outside Africa carry a 1–4% Neanderthal genetic inheritance.
Being the only human species on Earth is not the normal condition. It is a recent, temporary anomaly — and we are living in it.
Two Clocks, Badly Out of Sync
The animation runs two dials side by side over six million years: posture on the left, brain volume on the right. The story is what happens to the gap between them.
The clock starts at 6 Ma. The posture dial swings early and decisively — by 4 Ma it has locked to upright, and the camera drops to Laetoli where three sets of footprints press into wet ash: a human heel-strike, a human arch, no knuckle-marks. The ash hardens on screen and the timestamp sets: 3.6 million years ago.
Then the camera pans right, to the brain dial, and it has barely moved. 400 cc. A chimpanzee's brain, on a body that walks like yours. Lucy stands under both dials as the animation holds the pause — and it holds it a long time, because the pause is the point. Three million years of walking upright with an ape's brain.
Only then does the right-hand dial begin to climb, and the animation shows what pays for it. A stone flake opens a bone and marrow spills — dense calories. A fire lights and food cooks, and the gut visibly shrinks as its energy budget slides across the screen into the skull. A group assembles and lines of obligation and deceit draw between the figures, thickening. The brain curve steepens: 600, 900, 1,350 cc.
The last act shows the bill. A pelvis rotates into view with two arrows fighting: wide enough to birth a big head against narrow enough to walk all day. They cannot both win, and the compromise resolves on screen — the baby arrives early and helpless, the childhood bar stretches out long, and adults gather around it.
The closing frame kills the ladder. The march-of-progress silhouettes assemble, then scatter into a bush — branches everywhere, most terminating, several alive at any given moment. One branch alone reaches the present, and the caption is not triumphant:
