The Mesolithic is the middle stone age, a label created for the stretch between Paleolithic hunters and Neolithic farmers. Periodization is a tool, not a discovery—nobody living in 8000 BCE knew they were between things.
Around 11,700 years ago, the Holocene began and the ice retreated. Sea levels rose by over a hundred metres, drowning land bridges like Doggerland beneath the North Sea.
Forests advanced over open steppe-tundra. As the megafauna vanished, herds gave way to solitary forest animals like red deer and wild boar.
