The Worst Mistake in the History of the Human Race
That is Jared Diamond's title, and it is deliberately provocative, and the skeletons partly agree with him.
Farming is the most consequential thing our species has ever done. It also, on the evidence of the people who first did it, made individual human lives measurably worse:

So the question is not "why was farming better?" It is the far more interesting: why did anyone keep doing it?
The Answer Is Arithmetic, Not Preference
Farming makes people worse off and more numerous. A field of grain feeds more mouths per hectare than the wild landscape it replaced, and cereals wean babies earlier, so births come closer together. Within a few generations the farming population is larger — and it is trapped: those extra people cannot be fed by going back.
This is a ratchet, not a choice. Nobody chose farming as a lifestyle upgrade; groups drifted into intensifying wild-cereal use, grew, and then could not reverse. The consequence is brutal and simple:
And the numbers were on farming's side in every conflict that followed. Foragers do not lose to farmers because farming is better. They lose because there are ten times as many farmers.
What Domestication Actually Is
Domestication is not a decision. It is evolution under human selection, mostly unintentional at first:
- Wild wheat shatters — the ripe head explodes to scatter seed. Any mutant that fails to shatter is a plant nobody's genes reach the ground. But a human harvester with a sickle collects precisely the heads that stayed intact — and replants them. Within centuries the field is full of a plant that cannot reproduce without you.
- Wild animals are selected for tameness, and tameness drags a whole syndrome with it: smaller brains, floppier ears, patchy coats, earlier breeding.
Neither party consented. Wheat did to us what we did to wheat — we cleared its competitors, watered it, spread it to every continent, and organized our entire society around its calendar. Which species domesticated which is a genuinely funny question with no comfortable answer.
It happened independently at least seven times: the Fertile Crescent (wheat, barley, sheep, goats), China (rice, millet, pigs), Mesoamerica (maize, beans, squash), the Andes (potato, quinoa, llama), New Guinea (taro, banana), West Africa (sorghum, yams), and the eastern North American woodlands. Seven separate inventions on five continents, within a few thousand years of each other, after 300,000 years of nobody farming — which tells you the trigger was global. The end of the Ice Age gave every region a warm, stable Holocene at once, and in region after region, people walked into the same trap.
Worse Off, and Unable to Stop
The animation refuses to open with a triumph. It opens with two skeletons.
Left: a forager. Right: an early farmer from the same region, a few thousand years later. The animation measures them against a scale and the farmer is shorter. It zooms the jaws — the farmer's teeth are pitted with cavities. It highlights the skull — porous bone, anaemia. The spine — compressed from grinding grain. A work-hours bar slides out and the farmer's is longer. Every single indicator, one after another, goes the wrong way.
Then the question lands on screen, and it is the real one: so why did anyone keep farming?
The second act answers with arithmetic. A hectare of wild landscape fills with the people it can feed — a scattered handful. The same hectare converts to a grain field and refills — many more figures, packed in. A birth-interval bar shrinks: cereal weans babies early, so the next child comes sooner. The population curve begins to climb, and the animation overlays the individual-wellbeing curve falling as it does. The two lines cross and keep going in opposite directions. That crossing is the whole lesson.
Act three shuts the door. A figure looks back at the wild landscape and tries to walk into it — and the animation shows exactly why he cannot: the population that farming created does not fit in the landscape that foraging supported. The extra figures have nowhere to stand. The gate closes not because anyone locked it but because there are too many people to go back through it.
The final act zooms out to the globe and drops seven pins — the Fertile Crescent, China, Mesoamerica, the Andes, New Guinea, West Africa, eastern North America — each lighting independently, none in contact with the others, all within a few thousand years after 300,000 years of nobody farming at all.
The closing caption does not moralize. It just notes that the same trap, in seven places, caught everyone who walked near it — and that a species can make itself worse off and more numerous at the same time, which is exactly why "was it progress?" is the wrong question.
