The Alloy That Required an Empire

Bronze is copper plus roughly 10% tin, and that sentence contains the politics of the age. Copper is soft, but adding tin yields a metal hard enough for weapons, castable into complex shapes, and fully recyclable.

The trouble is the tin. While Mediterranean copper came from places like Cyprus, tin came from Anatolia, Central Asia, and Cornwall. A sword in the Aegean required a supply chain spanning thousands of kilometres.

This created the first strategic vulnerability: a civilization's core military technology depended on imports from strangers. The Uluburun shipwreck (c. 1300 BCE) proves this, carrying ten tonnes of Cypriot copper, a tonne of tin, and goods from five regions in one hull.

Metal Makes Hierarchy

Smelting demands 1,100°C furnaces and years of skill, creating specialists who must be fed by agricultural surplus.

Grain rots; bronze does not. A permanent store of value creates permanent inequality, visible in elite warrior burials. Later, iron inverted this:

Iron ore is everywhere, so it cannot be monopolized. While technological determinism is a trap, iron democratized weaponry when scarcity vanished.
