The Life Cycle of a Learned Association
Beyond the basic acquisition of a conditioned response, classical conditioning has a full life cycle worth tracing in detail. Acquisition is the initial learning phase, when a neutral stimulus is repeatedly paired with an unconditioned stimulus until it becomes a conditioned stimulus; pairing works best when the neutral stimulus is presented shortly BEFORE the unconditioned stimulus, so it can serve as a predictive cue.
If the conditioned stimulus is later presented repeatedly WITHOUT the unconditioned stimulus, the conditioned response gradually weakens and disappears — a process called extinction. Extinction is not the same as forgetting, though: after a rest period, the extinguished response can suddenly reappear, weakly and temporarily, when the conditioned stimulus is presented again — a phenomenon called spontaneous recovery, showing that the original association was suppressed, not erased.
Two further processes shape how broadly a conditioned response applies. Stimulus generalization is responding to stimuli similar to the original conditioned stimulus as though they were the same (Little Albert, conditioned to fear a white rat, also showed fear of other white, fuzzy objects). Stimulus discrimination is the opposite: learning to respond ONLY to the original conditioned stimulus and not to similar ones, typically through selectively pairing the true CS with the US while presenting similar stimuli without it.

Finally, higher-order conditioning extends the chain: once a stimulus has become a reliable conditioned stimulus, pairing a NEW neutral stimulus with that established CS (rather than with the original US) can make the new stimulus a conditioned stimulus too — conditioning built on conditioning, though typically weaker and harder to sustain than the original link.
Common pitfall: treating extinction as if the learned association is permanently erased. Spontaneous recovery demonstrates that extinction mainly suppresses the response rather than deleting the underlying association — which is also why relapse after successfully "extinguishing" a fear or craving remains a real clinical concern.
