The Life Cycle of a Learned Association
Classical conditioning is not just a single moment of learning; it has a dynamic life cycle that governs how associations form, fade, and spread.
Acquisition is the initial learning phase where a neutral stimulus is paired with an unconditioned stimulus. This pairing works best when the neutral stimulus is presented shortly before the unconditioned stimulus so it acts as a reliable predictive cue.
If the conditioned stimulus is later presented repeatedly without the unconditioned stimulus, extinction occurs as the conditioned response gradually weakens. However, extinction is suppression, not erasure.
After a rest period, the extinguished response can temporarily reappear, a phenomenon known as spontaneous recovery, proving the underlying association survived.
Spreading and Chaining Responses
Two opposing processes determine how broadly a conditioned response applies to related environmental cues:

Common pitfall: Treating extinction as permanent erasure. Spontaneous recovery proves the memory is only suppressed, explaining why clinical relapses after therapy are common.
