Learning That Isn't Always Visible

Not all learning shows up immediately in behavior — a challenge to strict behaviorism's insistence on observable behavior alone. Edward Tolman's studies of rats in mazes demonstrated latent learning: rats allowed to explore a maze freely, with no reward at the end, still learned its layout — they had formed an internal cognitive map of the maze — even though nothing in their behavior showed it at the time. When food was later placed at the maze's end, these rats suddenly navigated it as efficiently as rats that had been rewarded all along, proving the learning had been there all along, simply unexpressed until there was a reason to use it.

A very different, and troubling, discovery came from Martin Seligman's early research. Dogs exposed to inescapable electric shocks eventually stopped trying to escape entirely — and, strikingly, continued to passively endure the shocks even later, when escape became easily possible. Seligman called this learned helplessness: after learning that their actions had no effect on an outcome, the dogs generalized that lesson even to new situations where action WOULD have worked. This finding became foundational to later cognitive models of depression, where a person's belief that their actions cannot change a bad situation can itself perpetuate passivity, even once circumstances change.

Both findings pushed psychology to acknowledge that INTERNAL cognitive representations and expectations — not just external reinforcement history — shape behavior, a key bridge between strict behaviorism and the cognitive revolution discussed elsewhere in this course.

Common pitfall: assuming learned helplessness means an animal or person has simply "given up" out of laziness or low motivation. The mechanism is a learned EXPECTATION that outcomes are uncontrollable, generalized inappropriately to a new situation — not a general lack of effort or motivation as such.
