Counting, or Understanding Deeply?

Psychological research broadly divides into two methodological traditions. Quantitative research collects numerical data and analyzes it statistically, typically with larger samples, aiming to test specific hypotheses and produce findings that generalize beyond the sample studied — a survey measuring anxiety scores across 500 participants is quantitative. Qualitative research collects non-numerical data — interview transcripts, open-ended narratives, observational field notes — typically with smaller samples, aiming to explore a phenomenon in rich contextual depth rather than test a pre-specified hypothesis; a set of in-depth interviews about the lived experience of chronic illness is qualitative.

Neither approach is simply "better" — they answer different kinds of questions. Quantitative research is well suited to questions like "how much" or "how strongly related," where precision and generalizability matter most. Qualitative research is well suited to questions like "what is this experience like" or "how do people make sense of this," where the numbers alone would flatten out exactly what is most informative.

Mixed-methods research deliberately combines both traditions in a single study — for instance, using a survey to measure how common a symptom is, and follow-up interviews to understand what living with that symptom actually feels like — capturing breadth and depth together.

Common pitfall: assuming qualitative research is simply "less rigorous" than quantitative research because it lacks numbers. Qualitative research has its own established rigor standards (systematic coding, checking for researcher bias, seeking disconfirming cases) — it trades statistical generalizability for a kind of depth and nuance that numbers alone cannot capture.
