Turning Curiosity Into Evidence
The scientific method is a systematic procedure for building reliable knowledge: starting from an observation, formulating a research question, proposing a testable hypothesis, deriving a specific prediction, running a study to test it, analyzing the resulting data, and drawing a conclusion that other researchers can attempt to replicate. Psychology adopts this cycle from the natural sciences, distinguishing itself from purely philosophical speculation about the mind by insisting that claims be checked against evidence.
A central requirement, formalized by philosopher of science Karl Popper, is that a genuine scientific hypothesis must be falsifiable — there must be some possible observation that, if it occurred, would count as evidence AGAINST the hypothesis. A claim that no conceivable evidence could ever contradict (e.g. "everything happens for a hidden, undetectable reason") sits outside science entirely, however intuitively appealing it may feel.

Scientific reasoning combines two directions of logic: inductive reasoning builds general patterns up from specific observations (many swans observed are white, so perhaps all swans are white), while deductive reasoning works the other way, deriving specific predictions from a general theory (if this theory is true, then this particular experiment should come out a certain way). A theory is a broad, well-supported explanatory framework; a hypothesis is a specific, testable prediction derived from it — theories are built from many replicated hypothesis tests, not the reverse.
Common pitfall: treating "hypothesis" and "theory" as interchangeable, with theory meaning "just a guess." In science, a theory is a much STRONGER claim than a hypothesis — a broad framework already supported by extensive converging evidence, not a single untested guess.
