Health and Safety in the Workshop
Health, safety and sustainability attach to every block of this syllabus. Sculpture workshops contain genuine hazards. Most are cumulative rather than dramatic.
Respirable Crystalline Silica
This is the most serious chronic studio hazard, and the least visible. Crystalline silica is present in clays, plaster, stone and glazes. Fine particles cause silicosis, an incurable scarring of lung tissue.
Two factors make it exceptionally dangerous:
- The particles are too small to see. A clear-looking room can hold fine dust for hours.
- The damage is cumulative and irreversible. You get no acute warning symptoms on the day.
Core Dust Controls
- Wet methods first. Sponge and sand with water to suppress dust at the source.
- Never dry-sweep. Sweeping kicks fine settled particles straight back into the air. Mop instead.
- Local exhaust ventilation must capture dust right where it is generated.
- Respiratory protection rated FFP3 is required whenever dust cannot be fully engineered out.
- Clean as you go so dust never accumulates to be disturbed later.
Chemical and Physical Hazards
- Solvents: Vapours are heavy and settle low. Keep containers closed and ventilate well.
- Epoxy resins: Potent skin sensitisers. Repeated contact can cause a permanent allergy, so wear proper gloves.
- Isocyanates: Found in some foams and coatings. They are serious respiratory sensitisers.
- Glaze materials: May contain toxic compounds like barium or lead. Always read the safety data sheet.
Physical risks include hot kilns, noisy angle grinders, sharp hand tools and heavy lifting.
Workshop Sustainability
- Reclaim clay. Unfired clay is fully recyclable in the studio.
- Plaster never enters a drain. It sets underwater and blocks pipes. Use settling traps.
- Solvent and resin waste must go to hazardous waste collection, never down a sink.
- Fire efficiently: Always fire full kilns on well-planned firing schedules.
- Choose materials with their disposal in mind. Thermoset resins endure indefinitely in landfill.
Common pitfall: Viewing safety as arbitrary rules. Materials dictate the precautions. Learn the chemistry and the correct practice naturally follows.
