Practice question · Fill in the blanks

Complete the account of scanning and hybrid work.

Sampling a negative below the resolution its grain requires produces an artefact called grain ______. A scanner that records a longer density range than most flatbeds is a ______ scanner using photomultiplier tubes. A file printed on transparency film at final print size, for contact printing, is a digital ______. A 35 mm frame is 36 millimetres long, which is ______ inches.

Word bank: aliasing · drum · negative · 1.417 · blooming · 1.5

Hints
  1. The first blank names a sampling artefact, not a property of the film.
  2. The last blank is 36 divided by 25.4.

Sampling a negative below the resolution its grain requires produces an artefact called grain aliasing. A scanner that records a longer density range than most flatbeds is a drum scanner using photomultiplier tubes. A file printed on transparency film at final print size, for contact printing, is a digital negative. A 35 mm frame is 36 millimetres long, which is 1.417 inches.

Why

The first blank is the one that misleads people about their own negatives. Grain aliasing looks like coarse grain and is not: it is a sampling artefact that appears when the scan resolution falls near the grain size, and scanning higher makes it go away rather than worse.
