Painting I covers what a painter needs to know about colour and materials, and how to develop and present a body of work. Lessons are short and followed by practice questions with instant feedback.

The first unit covers colour as pigment and as light, simultaneous contrast and harmony, the symbolic and psychological life of colour, form and composition, the principles of visual perception, supports, sizing and grounds, aqueous media, oil and the rule of fat over lean, and brushes and marks. The second unit turns to analysing finished works, pictorial space, working in series, creative strategies, the personal project, meaning, research methods, context, multidisciplinary processes and exhibition.
